Kendl Winter straddles the realms of folk, bluegrass, and indie rock with a slightly kooky grace. Her virtues as a singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist can be found in fine form on her third K Records album, It Can Be Done!. Winter’s music suggests both the old-time Appalachian sounds of Hazel Dickens and the idiosyncratic folk-pop of Victoria Williams and Devon Sproule. Her lyrics recall the sights and sounds of her Arkansas upbringing, seasoned by years spent on the road, and her skill at combining traditional elements with nicely honed hooks comes through in “How to Keep It Hawt” and “Hands Behind Your Back.” There’s a jaunty, life-embracing feel to tunes like “Rocking Chair,” “Dreaming of Babylon,” and “Rosie.” “Huckleberry Blue” catches her at her rootsiest, while the title track gives her room to get expansive and spacy. Throughout, Winter’s banjo playing is consistently fresh and engaging, as easy-flowing as running water and full of quirky licks. Drummer Austin Cooper, bassist Joe Capoccia, and cornetist Ashley Eriksson contribute to the album’s colorful sonic palette and overall emotional warmth.
