Mission statements don’t get more succinct than “we are magnificent machineries of joy,” the title-track chorus that warmly welcomes us into British Sea Power’s fifth album. And when the epic tune’s hypnotic, string-swept rhythm kicks into high gear, the UK art rockers deliver on that promise. But the joy takes many different forms: “Monsters of Sunderland” is a whirling dervish of brass fanfares and bouncing-ball drumbeats; “Radio Goddard” retains the horn section’s services for a lush acoustic serenade illuminated by angelic backing vocals.
