When Kevin Henthorn isn’t scoring for film and TV projects, the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter works alongside producer/engineer Ariel Loh as Cape Francis, crafting a back-porch intimacy not unlike that of kindred spirits Hovvdy. If 2022’s Don’t Let Your Heart Walk Away possessed an anthemic pulse under its tangle of acoustic guitars and echo-laden vocals, then Cape Francis’ fifth full-length Modern Dance is decidedly more stripped-back in its melodic thrust. Check out the darkly shaded “Bad Advice,” which recalls the eerily lit barroom tales of Andy Shauf along with fellow Los Angeleno Christian Lee Hutson. The new approach showcases Henthorn’s voice, which stretches across the slow strum of “Two Waves” like a cat in sunlight.
