About Dear Bo Jackson

Southern rock doesn't sound much like it used to. From Kings of Leon to the Mississippi-gone-Nashville band The Weeks, the modern sounds of Southern pride have little, if anything, to do with The Allman Brothers Band or Lynyrd Skynyrd in the '70s. The Weeks' singer, Cyle Barnes, is more of a street-smart raconteur in league with fast-talking leading men like The Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis or any member of The Beastie Boys. "Brother in the Night" messes with a smooth funk that could come from Memphis or Steely Dan as Barnes recounts the life around him. "King-Sized Death Bed" bounces around, mixing the neurotic intensity of The Strokes with a horn section. "Ain't My Stop" slows down enough to qualify as a ballad and, along with the slow-pitched "Bad Enough," starts the album's emotionally intense section. "White Ash" churns with agitation. "Thief in My Mouth" and "Chickahominy" evoke the desperation of The Replacements and The Hold Steady. Only "Harlots Bluff" and "Wo Is I" throw together enough rhythm to blast through the somber vibes for some dancing in the streets.
