Before its 2008 breakup, the Los Angeles–based Spineshank crafted three amazing albums that pushed the boundaries of nu-metal while retaining a peerless heaviness in musical attack. Its 2012 reunion spawned a comeback album with the band’s original members. Anger Denial Acceptance reveals a band resilient enough to change with the times while keeping the core of its characteristics intact. The opening cut, “After the End,” reveals that the quartet has completely done away with the industrial trappings of its prior recordings, which would have sounded somewhat dated in 2012’s metal climate. With the prerequisite juxtaposition of harshly screamed vocals and melodious singing, Spineshank joins the ranks of the relevant. “Nothing Left for Me” abounds with moments that rock as if Foo Fighters had finally succumbed to Dave Grohl’s more metal leanings—but it’s the title track that better balances Spineshank’s Jekyll-and-Hyde bipolarity of pummeling metal ferocity and ascending melodies.
